Was there a budget or something?

"A desperate, cynical attempt just before the election" is how I've just heard John Key (on National Radio) describe Michael Cullen's budget tax cuts. Which made me smile. Because that is just simply untrue. The tax cut package - the lowering of the bottom rate and moving all the brackets out - is surely just the modest prelude. Seeing as how there is no way the election can be staged before October or November, expect a desperate and cynical attempt to occur around September.

Given that Michael Cullen has previously stated:
"My view is that tax cuts are largely offered as a political bribe, not because of beneficial economic or social effects."

Then his new found liking for tax cuts, modest or other wise, can harldly be seen as anything But cynical. Remember that he has only had the massive surpluses that he has because of his increased tax take, not because of increased productivity.

I dont think the budget is cynical! its getting tough for families at the moment so it is appropriate timing to cut them/us some slack. sure its bribey-looking but thats just politics, like they're not going to try it on in an election year!

I don't like Winston's politics much but he's a great speaker. The budget debate was no exception.

PQ: I'll ask my probation officer about the OE thing. As for Mr Bradbury, I've being telling him for years now to take a video camera and really do the States - meet the Americans, converse, observe, relate etc. doco styles.

And I looked in my bag the other day - yesterday just before you made another comment about Slovenia - and what was in my change - a Slovenian one Euro coin. Weird - which comes from the Old English meaning... destiny. You freak me out sometimes, brother - and not just with your videos!
