Party pills go in fortnight

Party pills go in fortnight
Sellers of party pills have two weeks to clear their stocks before benzylpiperazine (BZP) is outlawed. Parliament passed a bill last night banning the active ingredient from April 1 and classifying BZP as a class C drug - the same as cannabis. Opposition parties branded the bill's sponsor, Associate Health Minister Jim Anderton, a "killjoy" and a "Muldoon Mini Me" for not allowing enough time to adjust.

This is insane – how many people have died from this? Are we really going to throw kids into our brutal, corrupt and racist prisons for Party Pills? Prohibition DOESN’T WORK and all this will do is push party pills underground and make money for gangs, it’s just so stupidly idiotic and very disappointing that ‘adults’ have come up with this. Jim Anderton and the loss of his daughter has more to answer for bad drug policy than any other factor.

Good question, how many people have died? How many people have suffered serious mental illnesses? My niece got extremely severe agoraphobia from these pills and it almost ruined her life.

Good riddance I say.

A friend of mine got painful stomach cramps from taking them.

Actually what about that guy who got shot in Christchurch by the police. Apparently he'd been on a three day binge of pills and alcohol before going psycho. Everybody who knew him said it was so out of character for him to do this kind thing so the pills may have been a contributing factor.

It time to change the law and start executing anyone who sells drugs within 72hrs after being busted. After several people start dangling from piano wire only I fool would risk selling drugs.

No different to a situation where she voluntarily accepted a cigarrette from you...or to put it in your preferred emotive terms "So you wouldn't mind me dosing your daughter up with arsenic"

Don't get me wrong, I think they are a bloody pain in the arse as well, I've taken them before but hate the feeling the next day so never touch the awful things - but I really have to wonder at how things will get one inch better by banning them - it's not 'drug dealers' being defensive, it's a real question of the mentality that would see kids in jail for something as petty as party pills

Jim Anderton is on a crusade to ban everything since his daughter ODed and he is left with his guilt at doing nothing to stop it.

I'm no fan of Party pills but this is another manifestation of the nanny state trying to control us. In my opinion, all drugs should be legal to adults. Educate everyone on what they do. Sell them and tax it at a reasonable level. That's what they do with ciggies and booze which kill more people than all other drugs by far, as everyone knows.

People are already educated in what drugs do, I don't think that's the issue. People know what alcohol and smoking does but it doesn't stop the abuse does it?

but will we really throw people in prison for 3 months for something as pathetic as party pills? That is insane

Party pills are "pathetic"? They are basically MDMA analogues for crying out loud - in their neurochemical action anyway (maxes out serotonin and dopamine systems). That's enough to warrant a serious question of their safety and availability. They're certainly not "innocent" or "pathetic" even though drug pushers like Mark Bowden gave them the innoculous name of "party pills".
